The Engineering Research Institute works towards research and development in the field of technology and engineering with the aim to build knowledge and skills that are useful to the Icelandic business sector.

The Institute takes an active part in the development of the facilities and practical teaching of engineering students at the University of Iceland.

The Institute provides consulting services for the Icelandic government and works towards solving problems that require engineering expertise.
Among the projects of the Institute are education, lectures, courses and conferences that contribute to increased technical expertise in the country,  as well as providing training to scientific and research staff.
