The Earthquake Engineering Center at the University of Iceland was established in 2000 with a special agreement between the University of Iceland, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, Árborg Municipality and the Ministry of Defense. 

The main operation of the Centre consists of the following:

• Basic research
• Contract research
• Training of students for research and building facilities for engineering education
