Tactile belt for conveying information

About the research

In this project a tactile belt will be developed. This tactile belt will be used to convey information to the user - the development will be made in cooperation with visually impaired individuals. Applicants have previously made four prototypes and tested with good success. Experiments revealed two new haptic illusions which will be investigated thoroughly in this project as well as ways to prevent them. It is important to prevent illusions in order to ensure that the correct information is conveyed to the user. However, if the illusions are very well known they can be exploited. Simultaneously to the illusion investigation the belt will will be improved with the same goal in mind. Additionally, the belt will be improved in order to increase usability, efficiency, wearability robustness to usage.
