New transport containers for fresh food

About the research

The research and development project T-KER is a cooperation project between Sæplast, Matís, Innovation Center Iceland, University of Iceland, University of Akureyri, ITUB and Icefresh in Germany. The aim of the project is to design new twin-transport containers, which are intended to improve volume utilization during transport and storage and lower transport cost by up to 40%, preserve food quality as well or better and improve stacking safety compared to existing packaging solutions. The containers are originally designed for fish but other very large markets are possible, i.e. transport of meat and vegetables where transport costs are also important. The positive environmental impacts of the new containers are explained by both the improved volume utilization and more usage of re-usable packaging as compared to single-use packaging.
