About the research

Global environmental changes impact the socio-economic situation in present day societies. Fast, automated, big-scale mapping and monitoring techniques are crucial to mitigate the effect of the changes and understand the scale and the complexity of the controlling processes. EMMIRS is a multidisciplinary, pioneering project that exploits the power of the best spatial and spectral remote sensing data to both develop and employ state-of the art map and monitoring techniques.
The focus is on two remote sensing super sites, Hekla and Öræfajökull, as showcases for many types of environmental changes that Iceland and the rest of the world are exposed to. Detailed geological and vegetation maps of the two sites will be produced through advanced classification based on new data that will be collected in EMMIRS along with available data. Historical monitoring based on the existing data archive will be performed by change detection based on data fusion.
Hence, the environmental changes through the last 70 years can be assessed for Hekla and Öræfajökull. Together with spatial analysis and cutting-edge-modelling, the frequency of processes and their controlling parameters can be investigated providing a unique and comprehensive understanding of landscape dynamics.
he EMMIRS project integrates young scientists and world-leading expertise from multidisciplinary fields to push the boundaries and develop and implement the environmental mapping and monitoring techniques of tomorrow.
