In recent years, there has been a growing interest in drilling deeper geothermal wells to generate more energy, which means higher temperatures and higher pressures and a more corrosive environment. This leads to increased corrosion and thermal expansion and contraction which can lead to breakage of the linings.

The aim of the project is to develop a sacrificial casing that can protect the steel casings in the geothermal borehole against corrosion and the thermal expansion effect so that the strength of the borehole does not decrease. With the sacrificial lining, it is possible to increase the life of boreholes and save Icelandic energy companies a great deal of maintenance costs and the cost of making new boreholes.

Current solutions on the market are not suitable for withstanding harsh geothermal environments. Gerosion will use the team's expertise and experience in corrosion science and material selection in a geothermal environment to develop the sacrificial lining.
