Research and Modeling of Geothermal Well Materials

About the research

In recent years there has been increased interest in the world towards drilling deeper geothermal wells to obtain more energy output per well with the corresponding higher temperature, pressure and more corrosive environment. This will cause higher loads on the structural system of the wells, the steel and cement casings, increasing the likelihood of failure of the well due to corrosion damages or breakage of casings.

The research work of this project is divided into a material research and testing of steel casings and cement mixtures and development of a FEM models in ANSYS of deep drilled geothermal wellheads and casings. The existing well cement grout composition used for conventional geothermal wells in Iceland will be improved as well as new corrosion and heat-resistant cement mixes will be developed for geothermal wells. The FEM modelling and the materials science investigations will then subsequently be used the technical planning of KMT and IDDP3 projects.
